What is a Dog Gym?
With nearly 60% of dogs now being overweight or obese [1], there has been a growing interest in recent years in keeping our furry friends not just happy and healthy but also physically active. This has led to the emergence of dog gyms also known as canine sports clubs, canine fitness centers, or dog fitness facilities—dedicated spaces where dogs can exercise, socialize, and engage in various activities that hopefully challenge their physical and mental abilities.

Disadvantages of Dog Gyms
While there might be some benefits of taking your dog to a canine sports club, there are also several downsides:
- Your Dog will be Stuck Inside: Dogs are naturally inquisitive animals that thrive outdoors, in nature, where they can explore, run, and engage with their surroundings. Being cooped up indoors for extended periods, as is often the case in dog gyms, can lead to boredom, anxiety, and restlessness. These conditions can negatively impact a dog's mental and emotional well-being, potentially causing behavioral issues.
- Unnatural Floor Surfaces: Most dog gyms feature floor surfaces that are optimized for human exercise equipment, such as rubber mats, cement, and artificial turf. These surfaces can be problematic for dogs. The unnatural flooring can put stress on a dog's joints, especially during high-impact activities like running and jumping. Over time, this can lead to orthopedic issues, such as hip dysplasia or joint problems, which may require costly medical attention.
- Limited Aerobic Exercise: Dog gyms typically focus on structured 'start and stop' exercises and play sessions, which may not adequately fulfill a dog's need for aerobic exercise. In a gym setting, the space is often limited, inhibiting your dog's ability to get the aerobic exercise he/she needs. Ask yourself how many miles did your dog actually run inside the canine sports club?
- Time Consuming for Humans: Enrolling your dog in a gym may also prove to be a time-consuming commitment for you as the pet parent. Many dog gyms require the dog's humans be present at all times in the gym. This reduces the gyms liability and insurance costs should an unfortunate incident occur. The time spent commuting to and from the gym, waiting for your dog's session to finish, and ensuring they're properly exercised can be burdensome for busy individuals.
- Improper or No Vetting of Other Dogs: When you take your dog to a gym, you expose them to a variety of other dogs with different temperaments and behaviors. Unfortunately, not all dog gyms conduct thorough vetting of the dogs that attend their sessions. This lack of screening can pose risks, as interactions between dogs can lead to fights, injuries, or traumatizing experiences for your pet. Without proper supervision and management of the dogs present, your dog may not have a safe and positive environment in which to exercise.
Advantages of Fitness Adventures

Mother nature is the original dog gym!
Pant & Wag's Fitness Adventures for dogs are an awesome way to get your pupper active and outside in their natural element. The woods are nature's agility course!
Unlike dog gyms and canine sports clubs, Pant & Wag will take your dog outside and into nature. We'll
run with your dog in the woods, uphills, and across rocky terrain to make sure he/she gets a cardio-pumping workout. Instead of being inside on hard cement floors which are bad for your dog's joints, we'll let your dog frolic around on natural dirt and grass. Instead of being thrown into a mix of unknown dogs of various fitness levels and temperaments, we'll match your dog with similar dogs. And instead of a dog-to-human ratio of several dozen to one, your dog will be just one of five or six dogs with one professional canine fitness coach.

Let's be honest... most dog gyms and canine sports clubs in Washington, DC are just re-branded dog daycare centers with a few pieces of agility equipment set up. Your dog is still going to be crammed inside a small dirty room with dozens and dozens of strange dogs with no nature to explore, no outside spot to go to the bathroom and without enough space to truly run around and get the type of vigorous aerobic exercise he/she needs.
